How to edit a PDF file online for free

Open any PDF in the USA Sky PDF editor and change text, add new text layers, insert signatures, or annotate — all in your browser.

  1. On the homepage, drop your PDF onto the upload area, or click to browse and choose a file from your computer.
  2. Wait a second for the editor to load — the file stays on your device, it doesn't upload to any server.
  3. Use the floating toolbar above each page to pick a tool: Text (add or edit text), Sign, Whiteout, Annotate, Shapes, or Redact.
  4. To edit existing text, click directly on the word you want to change. The text becomes editable in place — type to change it.
  5. To add a new text layer, click the Text tool, then click anywhere on the page. Type your text, then drag the layer to position it.
  6. When you're done, click 'Export PDF' in the top right. The edited file downloads to your computer — original is unchanged.

How to merge PDF files into one

Combine two or more PDFs into a single document with the dedicated Merge workspace. No file-size limits, no signup.

  1. Click 'Merge' in the top navigation, or open /merge directly. The merge workspace opens.
  2. Drop your PDF files onto the upload area, or click 'Add files' to pick them with the file browser. Add as many as you need.
  3. The files appear as thumbnails in the order they'll be combined. Drag them left or right to reorder.
  4. Click on any file thumbnail to preview its pages before merging — use this to confirm you've got the right document.
  5. If a file has pages you don't want, click 'Edit' on its thumbnail to pick a specific page range.
  6. Click 'Merge PDFs' at the bottom. The combined file downloads automatically — bookmarks, forms, and metadata are preserved.

How to compress a PDF file

Reduce a PDF's file size for email or web upload using the standalone Compress workspace. Output stays readable and prints clean.

  1. Open /compress from the top nav, or click 'Compress PDF' on the homepage.
  2. Drop your PDF on the upload area, or click to browse. The original file is kept intact on your device.
  3. Pick a compression level: Low (lightest reduction, best quality), Medium (balanced — default), or High (smallest file, lower image quality).
  4. Click 'Compress PDF'. A progress bar shows compression status — usually finishes within 5-15 seconds for typical documents.
  5. When it's done, the compressed file downloads automatically. The original-vs-compressed size ratio shows above the download button.
  6. If the result is still too large, try a higher compression level and re-run — your original file is still in the upload slot.

How to convert a PDF to a Word document

Turn a PDF into an editable .docx file. Tables, headings, and inline formatting carry over so you can edit in Microsoft Word, Google Docs, or LibreOffice.

  1. Open the editor at /edit, then open the 'All Tools' dropdown in the top navigation.
  2. Under 'CONVERT FROM PDF', click 'PDF to Word'.
  3. A file picker opens. Select the PDF you want to convert — it uploads to our conversion service over a secure connection.
  4. Wait while the backend converts it. A status message shows progress; conversions of 5-30 pages usually take 10-30 seconds.
  5. When the conversion finishes, the .docx file downloads automatically. Open it in Word, Google Docs, or LibreOffice to edit.
  6. Check tables and headings — most PDFs convert cleanly, but very dense layouts may need minor cleanup in Word after the round-trip.

How to fill out a PDF form and sign it

Type into form fields, add a typed or drawn signature, then save the filled form as a new PDF. Works on both AcroForm PDFs and flat scans.

  1. Click 'Fill & Sign' in the top navigation. The editor opens in Form Filler mode.
  2. Drop the form PDF on the upload area. If the form has native AcroForm fields, they're auto-detected and ready to type into.
  3. Click any field and type your answer. Tab moves to the next field; Shift+Tab moves back.
  4. If the PDF is a flat scan with no native fields, switch to the Text tool and click anywhere to place your text wherever needed.
  5. For your signature: click 'Sign' in the toolbar, then either type your name (we render it in a script font) or draw it with your mouse or trackpad.
  6. Click 'Export Filled PDF' at the top right. The filled-and-signed document downloads — the original blank form stays unchanged.

How to split a PDF into separate files

Break one PDF into multiple smaller PDFs — by page ranges, by bookmarks, by file size, by half, or wherever specific text appears.

  1. Click 'All Tools' in the top nav, then under 'ORGANIZE PDF' choose Split PDF, Split in Half, Split by Bookmarks, Split by Size, or Split by Text.
  2. Drop your PDF on the upload area in the split workspace.
  3. For 'Split PDF': type the page ranges you want — for example, 1-5, 8, 10-12. Each range becomes its own output file.
  4. For 'Split in Half': the PDF is split at the middle page — useful for two-up scans where each sheet has two original pages.
  5. For 'Split by Bookmarks': the PDF splits at every top-level bookmark, so chapters in a book become separate files.
  6. Click the green 'Split PDF' button. The output files download as a single .zip — open it to find each split file inside.

How to OCR a scanned PDF to make it searchable

Run optical character recognition on a scanned or image-only PDF. The output is a searchable PDF with selectable text — works in 50+ languages.

  1. Click 'OCR' in the top navigation. The OCR workspace opens.
  2. Drop your scanned PDF on the upload area. The file uploads to our OCR service over a secure connection (it's deleted from our servers when done).
  3. Pick the document language. English is the default; the dropdown includes 50+ other languages including Hindi, Arabic, Chinese, and Cyrillic-script languages.
  4. Choose the output format: Searchable PDF (original layout + invisible text layer behind the images) or Plain Text (just the extracted words).
  5. Click 'Start OCR'. A progress bar shows pages processed; typical scans of 10 pages finish in 20-40 seconds.
  6. When OCR completes, download the searchable PDF — or click 'Open in editor' to load the result directly into the USA Sky PDF editor for further changes.

How to delete pages from a PDF

Remove unwanted pages from a PDF, reorder the remaining ones, or rotate them — all in the Organize & Delete workspace.

  1. Click 'Organize & Delete' in the top navigation. The workspace opens with a page-thumbnail grid.
  2. Drop your PDF on the upload area. Every page renders as a thumbnail you can click on.
  3. Click a thumbnail to select it. Hold Shift and click another to select a range; hold Cmd/Ctrl and click to add individual pages to the selection.
  4. Press the Delete key, or click the trash icon on a selected thumbnail. The page is marked for removal — the change isn't saved yet.
  5. Use the rotate buttons on each thumbnail to rotate just that page 90° clockwise or counter-clockwise if needed.
  6. When you're done, click 'Save PDF' at the bottom. The new file downloads with the deleted pages gone — bookmarks and forms in the remaining pages are preserved.
